The Sports Education Leadership Foundation traveled to Zimbabwe and worked with teachers, coaches, and students in 2017 and 2018. We discussed the significance of lesson planning and practice planning, the important and vital role a coach plays in a young person’s life, coaching philosophies and strategies, as well as taught lessons in yoga, basketball, soccer, volleyball and restorative justice. We held workshops and hands-on skill development in agility training and body weight exercises. Our message and goal was to instill the importance, especially for girls and women, to participate in sports and physical activity to increase self-esteem, self-confidence, and leadership skills.
In 2018, we returned to Majiji High School for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the basketball/multi-sports court we had built for the school and community. In addition to the opening of the court, S.E.L.F. put the court to good use by conducting basketball lessons on the court, yoga sessions, tennis games, and volleyball matches. S.E.L.F. also donated sports equipment to Majiji and to the local elementary school, Mbembeswana as a ’Thank You’ for allowing us to use their basketball court the year before.
